The Great Waterford Bank Robbery of 1872

Nov 12, 2019 – Nov 12, 2019
Location: Van Schaick Island Country Club ( 201 Continental Ave, Cohoes NY)

Making off with $500,000 in cash, bonds and jewelry from the Saratoga County Bank vault in 1872 was national news! Several robbers broke into the apartment of Van Hovenburg who worked as a cashier for the Saratoga County Bank in Waterford. They held his family hostage until they could steal their prize, which prompted every newspaper to spread the word of this theft. Suspects from Troy as well as notorious New York City burglars were brought to trial, but where did the money go? Waterford Town Historian Russel Van Dervoort explores this story with a special 2-hour presentation.

Dinner and alcoholic beverages are available for separate purchase at Max 410 at the Van Schaick Island Country Club. This additional purchase is not required to attend the presentation. Reservations are not required – seating is first-come, first-served.
